So you got your December roster and you’re working every single holiday this month. Everyone else is making plans to go home for the holidays, and you’re stuck working.
What to do?
You’re going to have to get creative and take your celebration with you on your overnights, because there’s no place like a good layover for the holidays.
Without further adieu, here are my favorite winter layover destinations this month.
1. New York City, New York.
This one is a no brainer. Whether you fly into LGA, JFK or even EWR, you must find time to get to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and indulge in some serious holiday overload. Go ice skating, sip hot cocoa, window shop at Bergdorf Goodman and soak up the spirit of the season. New York City around the holidays always feels like magic and if you’re lucky enough to get a NYC layover, you need to go experience it.
2. Miami, Florida
Dreaming of a white Christmas? How about a white sand beach Christmas? For the Holidays this year, Miami offers a different kind of Winter Wonderland: Hot chocolate and churros, Puerto Rican eggnog and lawn flamingos decked out in tinsel. Of course, no Miami layover is complete without a visit to Santa’s Enchanted Forest, the largest holiday theme park in the world!
3. London, UK
There’s something about London during the holidays. It’s freezing, but that just makes it okay to sip hot toddys at two in the afternoon. Spend Boxing Day strolling along the Thames for the Southbank Christmas Market, or take in a rugby game from the local sports pub. Put on your best Holiday jumper, read a little Charles Dickens and go out for a traditional English meal. Check out this list of what the locals love and dive into your British Holiday!
4. Seattle, Washington
I know that I’m probably biased, but Christmas in the Northwest is a dream come true. Forget snow and grab a pair of rainboots and an umbrella. Head down to Pike Place Market for one of their many Holiday events, including seasonal cooking demos, “Magic in the Market” with Santa or a Peppermint Mocha from the original Starbucks. Duck into Radiator Whiskey or the Alibi Room for a romantic holiday nightcap or see a Holiday Burlesque show at the Can Can.
5. Salt Lake City, Utah
The snow. The mountains. The spectacular views. If you have a long overnight, rent a car with your crew and get ready to play in the snow. Countless ski resorts surround the city, including Park City and Snowbasin, and day passes are available. If falling down on a snowy mountainside dozens of times isn’t your thing, try strolling along Historic Main Street in Park City or checking out the gorgeous lights of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
